Sea Animals, one by one

The sea covers most of our planet and is full of extraordinary creatures. This word search fits neatly into a lesson about the marine environment or a unit on water, and the notes below introduce its eight inhabitants.

Shark — Existed before the dinosaurs, over 400 million years ago; some species must keep swimming constantly just to breathe.

Whale — The largest animal ever to exist on Earth: the blue whale can be over thirty metres long, and its heart is the size of a car.

Dolphin — Sleeps with half its brain at a time, so it never stops breathing, and calls to companions using a unique signature whistle.

Octopus — Has three hearts, blue blood and eight arms covered in highly sensitive suckers; it can change colour instantly to hide.

Turtle — Can live over a hundred years and always returns to the beach where it was born to lay its eggs.

Crab — Walks sideways and, if it loses a claw, can grow a new one.

Starfish — Has no brain or blood and can regrow a lost arm.

Jellyfish — Made of about 95% water, it has existed for over 500 million years and has no heart or brain.

The sea, between mysteries and good habits

The oceans cover over seventy per cent of the Earth's surface, and a huge part of their floor has still not been explored, which is why researchers keep discovering new species every year. The eight animals in the grid live at very different depths, from the shallow water near the shore, where crabs and starfish crawl, to the open sea, the realm of sharks, whales and dolphins.

Plastic is one of the biggest problems for marine life, and sea turtles are among its first victims because they mistake floating bags for jellyfish and swallow them. Telling children about it in simple words turns a pastime into a small lesson in caring for the environment: litter dropped carelessly can be carried by rivers and drains all the way to the sea.

After the grid: three sea-themed activities

With a few sheets of paper and a little imagination, the game goes on without tiring the children:

  • Four groups. Write the names on cards and sort them into mammals (whale, dolphin), fish (shark), reptiles (turtle) and invertebrates (octopus, crab, starfish, jellyfish). The surprise is discovering how few of them are fish.
  • The sea on a poster. Each child draws and cuts out the animal they found first and sticks it on a large blue sheet: in the end the class has built its own seabed.
  • True or false? Read out sentences such as “a crab walks sideways” or “a jellyfish has a brain” and ask the children to raise a hand if they are true; the notes above act as the answer key.

How this grid is built

The grid is 13×13 squares and hides eight words: one horizontal, four vertical and three diagonal. JELLYFISH, with nine letters, is the longest word; CRAB, with four, the shortest. As in every grid on this site, no word is written backwards. Because it is slightly larger than the usual 12×12, this one suits children of about seven and over.
